This is a one-page guide to strategies to improve safety at unsignalized intersections, including:

 

High frequency of right-angle crashes attributed to:

  • nearby driveways
  • traffic from minor street
  • skewed intersection
  • poor sight distance
  • drivers misjudging gaps
  • not enough gaps for drivers
  • driver unaware of intersection
  • nighttime conditions
  • failure to yield at stop or yield sign
  • possible signal location
  • heavy but balanced traffic flow
  • speed differentials of vehicles

 

High frequency of rear-end crashes attributed to:

  • left turning vehicles hit from behind
  • left opposing vehicles hit from behind
  • trucks and RVs entering divided highway
  • speed differential of entering vehicles
  • right turning vehicles hit from behind
  • appoaching vehicles hit from behind
  • no left turn lane and high opposing traffic
  • driver unaware of intersection
  • nighttime conditions
  • speed differentials of vehicles

 

High frequency of left-turn crashes attributed to:

  • left turn vehicles hit by opposing traffic
  • trucks and/or RVs entering divided highway
  • no left turn lane and high opposing traffic
  • nighttime conditions
  • heavy but balanced traffic flow
  • Poor sight distance

 

High frequency of sideswipe crashes attributed to:

  • speed differential of entering vehicles
  • vehicles within intersection
  • vehicles approaching intersection

 

High frequency of run off road crashes:

  • approaching intersection

 

High frequency of pedestrian/bicycle crashes:
