Urban Bikeway Design Guide. National Association of City Transportation Officials, New York, NY (2011) [Online] http://nacto.org/cities-for-cycling/design-guide/
This online guide was developed to assist major cities in designing bikeways that address the unique conditions and challenges of urban streets. The chapter on Intersections addresses: intersection crossing markings, two stage turn queue boxes, median refuge islands, through bike lanes, combined bike lane/turn lane, and cycle track intersections approaches. Example benefits of these treatments are to provide protected areas for bicycle left turns and crossings, raise awareness of potential conflict locations, reduce conflicts for bicyclists and truning vehciles, and provide connections with intersecting bicycle facilities.
