Managing Speed on Low-Speed Urban Streets
- Chaired by: Hermanus Steyn
- Event: 2018 TRB Annual Meeting
Design, Operations and Traffic Management, Safety and Human Factors
Urban streets are designed to offer accessibility and safety for all users, so low posted speed limits often are established to facilitate these objectives. Operating speeds on these streets often exceed the posted speed limit, however. This workshop introduces the topic of target speeds to urban street design so that operating speeds are consistent with the posted limit, roadway context, and modal mix. Quantitative tools to achieve these objectives will be introduced, along with a case study.
