Conclusions & Recommendations
- Purpose: analyze the relationship between access location and safety within the functional area of major-arterial intersections
- Results: commercial access density, corner clearance (access location), and median type have a significant impact on safety within intersection functional areas
- Functional areas represent a sensitive component of the traffic system
- When accesses are located within the functional area, additional conflicts are introduced, complicating vehicle maneuvers
- Functional areas must be preserved by adhering to access management standards to improve safety and increase efficiency
