VDOT Access Management Regulations and Standards Part 2

Evaluation of Spacing Standards: 2011

  • Original intent – periodic review.
  • 75+ exceptions approved during past 3 years
  • Input from VDOT staff and transportation consultants
  • Updates to standards effective Jan 2012
  • Reduce standards with numerous exceptions
  • Lower  ½ mile signal spacing – speed limits < 50 mph
  • Eliminate urban/rural criteria
  • Separate spacing for intersections vs. full access entrances
  • Reduce intersection spacing near interchange ramps
  • 2008 VA Tech study on crash rates near ramps

2008 VA Study found the crash rate:

  • Is dramatically lower at 750 ft and 990 ft spacing from ramps
  • Is minimal at 1,320 ft
  • No safety improvement:  2,640 ft spacing vs. 1,320 ft
