Evaluation of Spacing Standards: 2011
- Original intent – periodic review.
- 75+ exceptions approved during past 3 years
- Input from VDOT staff and transportation consultants
- Updates to standards effective Jan 2012
- Reduce standards with numerous exceptions
- Lower ½ mile signal spacing speed limits < 50 mph
- Eliminate urban/rural criteria
- Separate spacing for intersections vs. full access entrances
- Reduce intersection spacing near interchange ramps
- 2008 VA Tech study on crash rates near ramps
2008 VA Study found the crash rate:
- Is dramatically lower at 750 ft and 990 ft spacing from ramps
- Is minimal at 1,320 ft
- No safety improvement: 2,640 ft spacing vs. 1,320 ft
